Jamie Murray-Wells, Founder, Glasses Direct

It's been over five years since entrepreneur Jamie Murray Wells (28) launched his ground-breaking business www.glassesdirect.co.uk and in that time he has rewritten the rules and shaken the optical industry to its roots.

Conceived as an idea while he was at University, and launched in the front room of his parent's house, Glasses Direct entered the market with the aim of providing cut price prescription glasses over the internet, allowing people to afford several pairs and releasing them from the tyranny of 'only one pair'.

Because it was a new idea the optical industry said it wouldn't work, but today Glasses Direct is the largest direct-seller of glasses in the world. Selling a pair of glasses every three minutes around the clock, Glasses Direct has a multi million pound turnover and estimates it has saved the British public over £30 million on their glasses since its launch.

In January 2010, Jamie launched www.HearingDirect.com, a new website selling digital hearing aids from just £149, compared to an average high street price of £1,100. As Chairman of HearingDirect.com, Jamie works with a small team of industry experts aiming to revolutionise the sector, bringing quality value hearing aids to 8 million Britons who are hard of hearing. The company has already proved a massive success, challenging the high street (in a very cut throat industry) with quality service and high value hearing aids at low prices. In its first year it was shortlisted in two Entrepreneurial awards, including the CBI Growing Business Young Company of the Year, and has already saved UK consumers more than £1million.

Jamie has been a keynote speaker at the Federation of Small Businesses annual conference and has taken part in events aimed at promoting entrepreneurship to school children. More recently he has performed as a mentor in entrepreneurship schemes run by Channel 4 and the Times, as well as investing his own funds in start-ups.

In March this year, Jamie co-founded Start Up Britain, which aims to re-ignite UK business enterprise, and has the backing of Prime Minister David Cameron and Chancellor George.

Jamie has served as an advisor on business and enterprise to both the UK's then Labour Party government and the then Conservative Party opposition. As a member of the New Enterprise Council he was an advisor for the then Shadow Chancellor, George Osbourne.

Note

In December 2009 Jamie won the Real Business, Growing Business 'Young Entrepreneur of the Year' award. He was also named Esquire magazine's Young Entrepreneur of the Year.

Jamie was the youngest person to have received a Queen's Award for Enterprise (2009) and in the same year was crowned the Revolution "Hot Shot".

In 2006 Jamie won the Isambard Kingdom Brunel Young Companies Award.
In 2005 Jamie Murray Wells and Glasses Direct won:

  • The Shell LiveWIRE Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award

George has been with Lloyds Banking Group and its predecessor firms for 13 years. In that time he has held a broad range of senior finance, change and performance management roles with exposure to the Group's corporate, retail, SME and life & pensions businesses. Most recently in his career George was finance director of the Group's overseas operations - a culturally diverse and complex group of banking businesses in Australia, Ireland, Middle East, South & North America and Continental Europe. George is in his element when delivering strategic and commercial insight. He particularly enjoyed his role in the launch of a new corporate operation in Canada and an online retail savings business in Germany.

Pawan Sood Director Trygort Ltd / Fairline Coaches Ltd

Pawan was born in Glasgow in 1956 and has been involved in business since 1983.

He attended the High School OF Glasgow and went on to study Accountancy and Economics at Strathclyde University, followed by an attempt at becoming a CA with Thomson McLintock's, now KPMG

He decided being self employed was perhaps the best career to follow, and after arranging a soft loan from his parents became a partner in a nightclub in Glasgow City Centre and a working man's pub in the East End of Glasgow.

Fairline Coaches was created in 1986 and this is where he can be found on a daily basis.

He has been involved in the Commercial property market since 1998 and has portfolio of investment property in Scotland.

Being in business, he believes is a large portion of luck with a good helping of common sense.

He has a keen interest in the economy and politics and enjoys the lively discussion that exists in these harsh economic times.

Golf has become a great passion, as the onset of grey hair and an expanding midriff brought an end to his football career!
